Cadent Gas
Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy. We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.
Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.
Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep energy flowing.
Future of Gas
Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. We are proud to be leading the introduction of hydrogen as a key player in the journey to net zero. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, the ultimate goal is to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen. The next five years are crucial in making hydrogen a reality through a gradual energy transition.
Our Projects
Reaching Net Zero will mean reducing harmful CO2 emissions. Those emissions come from burning fossil fuels like coal, diesel and fossil gas – to power our industries, run our cars and lorries and heat our homes and businesses. We have to find new ways – greener ways – to do these things.
The great thing about hydrogen is that it doesn’t produce any CO2 emissions when used as a fuel. It can be used for heat, power and even fuel for large vehicles like HGVs. What’s more, it can be delivered through our existing gas network, keeping customer disruption to a minimum.
We are leading a number of programmes using hydrogen – including blending 20% hydrogen into areas of the gas grid, and developing the UK’s first Hydrogen Homes (with 100% hydrogen used for heating and cooking). Recently we also announced a proposal for the UK’s first Hydrogen Village, in an area within Ellesmere Port which will help shape Government policy and put hydrogen on the net zero map.
